Stella Donnelly: Beware of the Dogs

Words by GLORIA BRANCATISANO

An endearing favourite.

The style in which Stella Donnelly deals with her subject matter – direct, but with a sharp sense of humour – has made her an endearing favourite with Australian fans.

Now, with her debut album, Beware of the Dogs, she’s bringing her honest storytelling to the masses.

It’s fitting then, that her powerful breakout single, ‘Boys Will Be Boys’, finds a home on this record alongside some well- worn live favourites and a few new tales. Building on 2017’s Thrush Metal EP, Donnelly has welcomed a full band who eshes out her sound without losing any of the delicate, stripped-back setting.

Opener ‘Old Man’ is the perfect mission statement – while brimming with sweetness, its biting lyrics prove that Donnelly isn’t holding back.

Her sugary sweet brand of guitar-pop provides a cushion for her razor-sharp intellect, and whether it’s delivered with a mischievous smile or a punch to the gut, she’ll have you listening.
